- The original spelling of the family name was Dermatemydae. Reviewed by Smith and Smith (1979) and Iverson and Mittermeier (1980). Closely related to the Carettochelyidae, Trionychidae, and Kinosternidae according to Meylan (1987) and Gaffney and Meylan (1988).
