As for the family
Gray (1825:211) was the first to designate clearly a higher taxonomic category (Chelidina) between the genus and family level which included at least part of this group (i.e., Chelus, but not Chelodina). Australian forms are under study by J. M. Legler; those in South America and New Guinea, by A. G. J. Rhodin and R. A. Mittermeier.
