Comments Taxonomic history is discussed by Smith and Smith (1979) and Pritchard and Trebbau (1984). Phylogenetic relationships are discussed by Bramble (1974), Whetstone (1978), Sites et al. (1984), Hirayama (1984), Carr and Bickham (1986), Gaffney and Meylan (1988), and Carr (1990). The close relationship between batagurine and testudinid turtles has been supported by morphological (Hirayama, 1984; Gaffney and Meylan, 1988; Carr, 1990), karyotypic (Bickham and Baker, 1976b), and biochemical studies (Mao et al., 1987; Yin et al., 1989). Gaffney (1984) and Gaffney and Meylan (1988) recommended elevation to full family status. Tribe membership noted in generic accounts follows Mlynarski (1976). The taxonomy of this group at the genus and species levels is still poorly defined.
