Type Locality "dans les sables de la basse Égypte, surtout dans les environs d'Alexandrie" [Egypt]
Syntypes (number uncertain) includes at least MNHN 9839; USNM 10979; SMF 7810; SMF 7810 designated lectotype by Mertens 1967:52.

Distribution North Africa from Libya to southern Israel
Comments Subgenus Pseudotestudo, although Bour (1988c:18) presents evidence that this subgenus is not diagnosable. Reviewed by Loveridge and Williams (1957), Groombridge (1982), Buskirk (1985), and Stubbs (in Swingland and Klemens, 1989).
