- Northern and central South America from the Orinoco (and its nearby coastal drainages) to the Amazon river basins of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Guyana, French Guiana, (probably) Surinam, and Brazil; unconfirmed reports from the Lake Maracaibo basin of Venezuela are known (Pritchard and Trebbau, 1984)
